At Philo, we're a team of technologists and creators on a mission to construct the future of television, bringing together the best of advanced technology and the world's most captivating medium. In essence, we're building the TV experience we've always wanted for ourselves. This involves utilizing cloud-based delivery, contemporary tech stacks, machine learning, and custom-built app experiences across all of our platforms. We strive to deliver a robust streaming experience while developing cutting-edge multi-screen and multi-user playback experiences.

Data Science at Philo

Everything we do at Philo is powered by data: informing business decisions, evaluating and enhancing our streaming quality, conducting product experiments to refine our sign-up sequences, and simplifying the way our users discover their ideal viewing content. On the Data Science team, we need someone who is comfortable working on a diverse range of ad auction and placement optimization problems, employing experimentation to advance our ads systems, and guiding our team in balancing revenue generation and quality of experience across our streaming service. You'll work closely with other data scientists, analysts, and engineers to develop and deploy solutions directly for our service.

We are deeply passionate about problem-solving and providing data-driven insights for the entire company. We work in close collaboration with all departments, and leverage a broad scope of modern open-source tools, including dbt, GrowthBook, Robyn, Superset, and PyTorch, as well as SaaS tools like Segment, SageMaker, AWS Glue, Mode, Avo, and BigEye.

Some recent projects our Data Science team has undertaken include:

  • Creating models to identify which early product tendencies predict conversion
  • Conducting experiments to assess the impact of alternative ad bidding strategies
  • Developing data models for customer lifetime value analysis, including ad revenue
  • Performing price sensitivity research and competitive market analyses

Qualifications

Philo is seeking a Senior Advertising Data Scientist with proven knowledge in statistical modeling, A/B/n experimentation, SQL, and the ability to independently generate data-driven insights. This data scientist will use large structured, unstructured, transactional, and real-time datasets from various sources, analyze financial and customer usage patterns, and make actionable recommendations to the product, marketing, engineering, and business development teams.

In this role, the Senior Advertising Data Scientist will support the complete product development lifecycle for our advertising systems, from feature ideation and opportunity size assessment to measurement and experiment design, and from post-launch causal analysis and learning to the next development cycle. Senior Data Scientists at Philo contribute to mentorship and leadership within the Data team, either as people managers or individual contributors. Those with previous managerial experience or interest in managerial responsibilities will have the chance to take up such duties in their role at Philo.

Responsibilities:

  • Build a comprehensive understanding of how subscribers use Philo across our streaming platforms, how this usage influences advertising performance, and define metrics to evaluate new features in our advertising systems
  • Take ownership of analytics and tracking plans across multiple development streams, from metric establishment and data instrumentation design to ongoing reporting and research
  • Continuously enhance our experimentation methods and establish best practices for experiments in a live ad auction environment
  • Create curated dashboards that act as the primary references for assessing feature performance
  • Run queries to address ad-hoc product inquiries and create visualization dashboards in Mode for stakeholders
  • Take responsibility for your analytical projects, proactively identify issues and opportunities, test hypotheses, and suggest solutions
  • Collaborate with various teams across the company (e.g., business development, ad operations, marketing, and support) on KPIs, including, but not limited to, lifetime value, retention, win-back, and content consumption metrics

Key Qualifications:

10+ years of experience in a Data Science role, preferably with experience managing analysts, engineers, or data scientists. Demonstrated ability to influence product roadmaps and business decisions with data.

  • Established expertise in experimental design (including A/B testing), causal inference principles, and statistical methods
  • Proficiency with relational databases and SQL
  • Strong written and verbal communication abilities, with the capacity to introduce and present analytical methodologies and results to non-technical audiences
  • Proficiency in statistical analysis in either R or Python
  • Strong analytical groundwork – a degree in statistics, economics, a similar field, or equivalent professional experience
  • Experience in writing production-quality code in R/Python, transforming data models and statistical models into production-grade assets with tools such as Git, Sagemaker, dbt, and following best practices for software engineering around version control, review, and automated testing
