Job Summary Northeastern University's Institute for Experiential AI has created a position for a Sr. Research Scientist concentrated on work at the intersection of artificial intelligence Health/Wellness. The Sr. Research Scientist can be located at either the Portland, ME or Charlotte, NC (potential locations) campus and will conduct practical research, prepare work for journal/conference submissions, contribute to external funding applications, and manage projects. This position has a renewable appointment for three years. The position will associate with one of the specialized areas: AI + Health: This area uses AI to study and solve complex issues in the health sciences, encompassing fields such as digital pathology, real-world evidence/data, EHR/EMR data, and related fields. General Minimum Qualifications, Values & Abilities Needed for this Role A Ph.D. in computer science, AI, Data Science, computational biology, or a related field applicable to health or healthcare is required, with at least 3-5 years of progressive experience and independence in these fields. An outstanding post-Ph.D. research record, as evidenced by publications, grants, software outputs, and other scholarly impact indicators. Prior experience in writing proposals for sponsored research funding, research experience involving team science projects, and project management experience are strongly desired. Values & Abilities: Demonstrated capability to lead a research program and/or research team and secure external funding. Demonstrated capability to mentor trainees and team members on project aspects. We expect Sr. Research scientists to establish and advocate for best practices in the scientific reproducibility of all results and to promote the ethical use of data and algorithms. Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to effectively communicate with a variety of stakeholders, e.g., academics, business executives, government officials, journalists/media, etc. Comfort in navigating complex internal processes and structures. Respect for diversity and the importance of interdisciplinary teams. An entrepreneurial mindset, self-motivation, and innovative thinking while keeping up with multilayered channels within a university setting and working across multiple teams/business units. Additional Qualifications: AI in Health Strong research record utilizing AI in a health-related discipline. Applicants with the following training will be considered: PhD in computer science, machine learning, AI or related computational field, or, Ph.D. in a health-related discipline with extensive experience in experimental science, devices/technology, data collection, unique populations, etc., that can be leveraged for AI applications. Strong written/verbal communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to think critically and creatively, and to collaborate as part of a team. Entrepreneurial mindset and connections to the health/healthcare industry. Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities 45% - Co-develop, collaboratively lead, and participate in research projects that advance scientific knowledge and solve relevant societal and industrial problems. Participation in these projects will include supervising/mentoring postdoctoral researchers, graduate/undergraduate students, scientific programming, data analysis, manuscript preparation, meetings with collaborators, etc. 30% - Secure sufficient and relevant research funding to supplement finances by preparing research grant applications, delivering grant milestones, and producing reports and presentations. 10% - Lead research team members on specific projects and mentor the trainees. 10% - Represent the university in conferences, seminars, and other public events, as well as in media outlets. Perform service for the university and the research community by volunteering in various committees. 5% - Other duties as necessary. Sr. Research scientists are expected to obtain on average $300K per year by the third year of their appointment.
