The Faculty of Science and the Leiden Institute of Advanced Computer Science (LIACS) at Leiden University are excited to announce two available PhD positions focused on Reinforcement Learning for Sustainable Energy. These roles are integral to the collaborative efforts of our Reinforcement Learning Lab, which is dedicated to addressing the challenges of the global energy transition through cutting-edge AI and machine learning technologies.

About the Positions

We are seeking two dynamic PhD candidates: one will tackle applied challenges, working directly with real-world data and sustainability issues; the other will focus on theoretical advancements in reinforcement learning methodologies. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to significant projects that blend academic research with practical, impactful applications in the sustainable energy sector.

Key Responsibilities

As part of the LIACS, and in collaboration with our industrial partners, you'll engage with top-tier AI researchers, gaining access to industry-leading experts and resources. Your work will contribute to developing robust methods that have real-world implications, enhancing both your professional and academic growth.

Both roles are supervised within the LIACS Reinforcement Learning Group by esteemed professors Aske Plaat and Thomas Moerland.

Who Should Apply?

Ideal candidates will have:

  • A master’s degree in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, or a related field.
  • A strong background in Reinforcement Learning and Deep Learning, evidenced by projects or research conducted during your studies.
  • Excellent programming skills with experience in deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch, Jax, or TensorFlow.
  • A keen interest in sustainable energy solutions.
  • Robust research, writing, and presentation skills.
  • Effective teamwork capabilities and willingness to engage in teaching activities.

This PhD position is initially offered on a one-year term, with the potential for extension up to four years based on performance evaluations. Salaries range from €2,770 to €3,539 per month, plus generous holiday and end-of-year bonuses.
