Have you ever pondered over how Amazon reliably delivers countless packages to customer’s doorsteps on time? Are mathematical and data-oriented tasks your passion, and do you aspire to influence the experience of millions of customers? Do you enjoy the process of crafting simple algorithmic solutions to tackle exceptionally challenging problems? If your answer is yes, we are excited to hear from you! Amazon Transportation Services is on the lookout for Applied (or Research) Scientists. Being a vital part of the central Research Science Team of ATS operations, these individuals will be tasked with creating algorithmic solutions founded on data and math to optimize Amazon's middle-mile transportation network. The position is located in the EU Headquarters in Luxembourg, with alternate locations being Barcelona, Berlin, or London. The role is intended to boost interaction with the team and stakeholders; however, we will also consider candidates who require remote work. Basic qualifications * PhD in Operations Research, Machine Learning, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, or another field that focuses on algorithms and data (or equivalent experience). * Articulate written and verbal communication. * Experience with a programming language (for instance, Java/python/C++). * Previous research in one or more of: * Combinatorial optimization issues (e.g., scheduling, vehicle routing, facility location). * Continuous optimization issues (e.g., linear programming, convex programming, non-convex programming). * Predictive analytics (e.g., forecasting, time-series, neural networks). * Prescriptive analytics (e.g., stochastic optimization, bandits, reinforcement learning). Preferred qualifications * Have previously worked in a brisk, applied research environment. * The ability to manage ambiguity. * Publications in top-tier journals related to the field of study. Amazon is an equal opportunities employer. We firmly believe that a diverse workforce is key to our success. We base our recruitment decisions on your skills and experience. We value your eagerness to explore, invent, simplify, and build. Prioritizing your privacy and data security has been Amazon's long-standing commitment. Refer to our Privacy Notice (https://www.amazon.jobs/en/privacy_page) to learn more on how we gather, utilize, and transfer the personal data of our candidates. Key job responsibilities * Solve intricate optimization and machine learning issues using scalable algorithmic techniques. * Create and develop efficient research prototypes that combat genuine issues in Amazon's middle-mile operations. * Steer complex short-term, long-term as well as improvised analysis to facilitate decision-making. * Present business analysis, strategies, and tactics to the leadership team. A day in the life * You will brainstorm algorithmic approaches with teammates to tackle complex problems associated with Amazon's middle-mile operations. * You will develop and test prototype solutions using the algorithmic techniques derived above. * You will extract information from a sea of Amazon data to refine these solutions. * You will liaise with other scientists, engineers, stakeholders, and clients to enhance the solutions and ensure their adoption. About the team The ATS EU Science and Tech team is welcoming candidates who aspire to make a global impact with their mathematical skills and data-driven abilities. ATS (Amazon Transportation Service) represents the core of the middle-mile planners: we ensure that packages are transported from warehouses to cities within a restricted timeframe, thus facilitating the “Amazon experience”. We schedule more than 1 million trucks with Amazon shipments annually; the solutions we derive from our algorithms are of great importance to reducing CO2 emissions and ensuring Amazon products reach our customers with a smile. Our mathematical algorithms allow the leadership to confidently invest in programs worth several hundreds of millions of euros every year. Above all, we greatly enjoy the process of solving real-world problems at an agile pace, learning from our failures along the way. Basic Qualifications * Experience with patents or publications at premier peer-reviewed conferences or journals. * PhD, or Master's degree with 4+ years of experience in CS, CE, ML or a similar field. * Practical experience with programming in Java, C++, Python or a similar language. * Experience in any of the following areas: algorithms and data structures, parsing, numerical optimization, data mining, parallel and distributed computing, high-performance computing. Preferred Qualifications * Proficiency in Unix/Linux. * Professional software development experience. Amazon is an equal opportunities employer. We strongly believe that a diverse workforce is at the heart of our success. We make recruitment decisions based on your experience and skills. We value your enthusiasm to learn, create, simplify, and cultivate. Protecting your privacy and ensuring the security of your data has been a longstanding priority for Amazon.
