Overview

The Data Scientist will play a critical role in advancing the CDC Foundation's mission by leveraging data to drive strategic decisions and initiatives. You will work within the Great Plains Tribal Epidemiology Center (GPTEC) to utilize advanced analytics, statistical techniques, machine learning, and data visualization to support public health efforts in tribal communities. The goal is to create a comprehensive, user-friendly public health database for 18 tribal communities.

Responsibilities

Data Management

  • Expand and optimize data and data pipelines.
  • Transform unstructured data into structured formats for analysis by GPTEC and Tribal epidemiologists.
  • Collect, clean, and ensure accuracy and consistency of data from various sources.
  • Load data into storage systems or data warehouses.
  • Optimize data infrastructure and workflows for performance and scalability.

Visualization and Communication

  • Collaborate with GPTEC Data Coordinating Unit staff and epidemiologists to plan dashboard content.
  • Build tribal-specific dashboards based on input from GPTEC staff and tribes.
  • Create visualizations and reports to communicate findings to partners and decision-makers.
  • Ensure dashboards are easy to interpret for a general audience both digitally and in print.

General Responsibilities

  • Develop and improve data analysis and visualization tools.
  • Integrate automated data flows into the informatics system.
  • Provide data-driven support for public health policies and initiatives.
  • Stay updated on emerging trends in data science and analytics.
  • Explore innovative approaches to public health challenges.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics, Epidemiology, or related field. Master’s or PhD preferred.
  • Proficient in SQL, Python, JavaScript, C#. Proficiency in SAS and R is required.
  • Expertise in Tableau required, with a focus on interactive data visualization.
  • 3+ years of experience preferred.
  • Understanding of API ecosystems and experience designing, developing, and deploying Tableau dashboards.
  • Experience with relational databases and big data methods.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Flexibility to adapt to evolving project requirements.
  • Professional certifications in data science or public health analytics preferred.
  • Experience working in a virtual environment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
