Position Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Machine Learning Engineer with a primary focus on Natural Language Processing (NLP) to join the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre AI Team at UHN. This role is pivotal for leveraging AI to improve healthcare delivery network-wide by focusing on NLP projects using EMR data. The successful candidate will collaborate with care providers, researchers, and technical teams to create and deploy AI-driven solutions that enhance clinical decision-making and operational efficiencies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement cutting-edge NLP techniques to analyze and interpret complex EMR data.
  • Lead the architecture, development, and optimization of NLP functionalities for multiple hospital departments.
  • Drive the adoption of foundation models in healthcare, customizing them for specific clinical and administrative needs.
  • Design, build, test, and validate robust ML models for real-world clinical settings.
  • Oversee the deployment of AI solutions in live clinical environments from concept to implementation.
  • Act as the key technical lead, ensuring effective communication and collaboration between clinicians, IT staff, and researchers.
  • Contribute to grant writing and funding acquisition for NLP-based projects.
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior ML specialists and interns.
  • Stay updated on emerging AI trends, particularly in NLP and foundation models, and share insights with the team.
  • Manage multiple concurrent projects, effectively coordinating timelines and deliverables.

Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree required; PhD preferred in Machine Learning, Computer Science, Computational Linguistics, or related fields.
  • Minimum of 5 years of extensive experience in NLP with a strong emphasis on applying ML in healthcare.
  • Proficient in Python and NLP frameworks (e.g., Hugging Face, spaCy, NLTK).
  • Experience with foundation models and their real-world applications.
  • Strong analytical skills with a proven record in implementing and validating ML models.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Familiarity with EMR data complexities and healthcare data privacy regulations.
