The Role

Join our dynamic interdisciplinary group at Newcastle University's School of Engineering as a Research Assistant/Associate in Machine Learning for Complex Systems. In today's data-driven world, complex systems—from healthcare to climate science—pose significant challenges for traditional analytical methods. These systems are characterised by numerous interconnected components, nonlinear interactions, and dynamic behaviors that demand advanced tools and techniques for pattern discovery, performance optimisation, and informed decision-making.

Lead pioneering research to develop novel machine learning algorithms specifically designed for complex systems analysis. This role offers a unique opportunity to work on groundbreaking projects that address real-world challenges, driving advancements in scientific knowledge and practical applications.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement advanced machine learning techniques such as deep learning, reinforcement learning, and Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs).
  • Analyze intricate datasets from engineering and scientific domains.
  • Utilise advanced data pre-processing methods to uncover significant insights.
  • Develop and validate computational models, optimising their performance through iterative experimentation.
  • Collaborate with domain experts to ensure research relevance and impact.
  • Document findings, methodologies, and codebase for reproducibility.
  • Contribute to prestigious peer-reviewed journals and conferences.
  • Present work to non-specialist audiences.
  • Assist in securing funding by preparing research proposals and grant applications.
  • Support teaching activities within the School of Engineering.

This full-time (37 hours) role is fixed term until 31st August 2027. Flexible working requests are welcome, and blended working opportunities, including remote work options, may be considered depending on the role's needs.
