About This Role

We are excited to announce an opening for a Research Engineer within our interdisciplinary Research Engineering team at the heart of Foundational Research at DeepMind. This team collaborates closely with experts across multiple domains, driving forward groundbreaking research and transforming cutting-edge research into practical applications and technologies.

Key Responsibilities Include:

• Enhancing research methods for high-scale computational effectiveness.
• Engaging in performance engineering, benchmarking, and optimization.
• Addressing critical research challenges through design and execution of experiments, analyzing results, and proposing innovative solutions.
• Contributing engineering knowledge into multidisciplinary research projects and sharing expertise with fellow engineers and researchers.
• Developing and refining infrastructure supporting advanced research.

Our projects cover a broad spectrum within the AI and ML landscape, including advancements in large language models, diffusion models, reinforcement learning, distributed ML techniques, and beyond.

Skills and Qualifications:

• A degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Science, Mathematics, or relevant field experience.
• Proficiency in programming, particularly using Python-based scientific libraries like JAX, PyTorch, TensorFlow, and NumPy.
• Understanding of machine learning, mathematics, and statistics sufficient to engage with relevant research literature.

We are also keen on candidates who have experience with:

• Designing large-scale systems and distributed systems.
• Distributed computation strategies for ML, particularly using accelerators.
• Experience with C++, data engineering, visualization, or strong communicative abilities for sharing complex ideas effectively.
• Academic research or practical experience in ML, evidenced by publications or related project work.
