About the Role
As a Senior Machine Learning Engineer in our ML Underwriting team, you will be at the forefront of developing high-quality, production-ready models that play a crucial role in our decision-making processes. Your expertise will be instrumental in assessing creditworthiness throughout the life cycle of loan applications using cutting-edge machine learning techniques.
What You’ll Do
- Develop machine learning models using Affirm’s proprietary and third-party data to predict the likelihood of default and make approval or decline decisions to achieve business objectives.
- Collaborate with platform and product engineering teams to build model training, decisioning, and monitoring systems.
- Research groundbreaking solutions and develop prototypes that drive the future of credit decisioning at Affirm.
- Implement and scale data pipelines, new features, and algorithms essential to our production models.
- Work with engineering, credit, and product teams to define requirements for new products.
What We Look For
- 6+ years of experience as a machine learning engineer (relevant PhD can count for up to 2 years of experience).
- Experience developing machine learning models at scale from inception to business impact.
- Proficiency in machine learning with expertise in areas such as Generalized Linear Models, Gradient Boosting, Deep Learning, and Probabilistic Calibration.
- Strong engineering skills in Python and data manipulation skills like SQL.
- Experience with large scale distributed systems like Spark or Ray.
- Familiarity with open-source projects like scikit-learn, pandas, NumPy, XGBoost, PyTorch, and Kubeflow.
- Experience with Kubernetes, Docker, and Airflow is a plus.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the capability to drive cross-functional requirements with product and engineering teams.
- Persistence, patience, and a strong sense of responsibility—we build decision-making systems that enable consumers and partners to trust Affirm.
Compensation
Pay Grade - USA30. Employees new to Affirm or promoted into a new role typically begin in the minimum to mid-range. The USA base pay range varies by region:
CA, WA, NY, NJ, CT:
- Min: $162,400
- Mid: $203,000
- Max: $243,500
Other U.S. states:
- Min: $146,100
- Mid: $182,700
- Max: $219,200
