The University of Toronto's Faculty of Arts & Science is currently seeking a Staff Scientist to join the Acceleration Consortium and contribute to the development of Artificial Intelligence and Automation technologies in Self-Driving Laboratories (SDLs). Role Overview:

The Staff Scientist will play a crucial role within the AI and Automation Lab, engaging in cutting-edge research to drive autonomous discovery and develop essential materials and molecules to address major societal issues like climate change, water pollution, and future pandemics.

Key responsibilities will include developing innovative AI and automation solutions, managing various SDL configurations, and designing research programs that utilize these platforms for groundbreaking discoveries in material and molecular sciences.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Development of SDL and Automation strategies based on community, faculty, and partner input.
  • Leading independent research programs and support collaborative efforts within the Acceleration Consortium.
  • Managing the integration and functionality of sophisticated AI-driven lab equipment.
  • Contributing to ongoing advancements in materials and molecule synthesis, analysis, and characterization.
  • Facilitating networking by presenting research at conferences and collaborating on research proposal submissions.

Desired Expertise:

  • Generative modeling, active learning, reinforcement learning, and advanced machine learning techniques tailored for robust experimental design.
  • Simulation-based inference, neurosymbolic reasoning, and multimodal foundation models.
  • Experience in hardware integration, high-throughput experimentation, and AI-driven experimental planning.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Education: Ph.D. in Chemistry, Materials Science, Physics, Engineering, Computer Science, or a related discipline.
  • Experience: At least 5 years of relevant research experience, including a strong background in AI and automation within a laboratory setting.
  • Skills: Proficiency in organic synthesis, AI programming, and proven ability in leading scientific teams and projects.

Salary and Appointment Details:

This is a full-time continuing appointment under a university research associate grant. Salary ranges from $60,304 to $150,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
