Are you eager to jumpstart your career within the field of Emergency Management and Response? Michael Baker International is currently looking for a motivated Water Resources-Data Science Intern for our Alexandria, Virginia office. As part of our dynamic team, you'll engage with a focus on coastal engineering, flood risk management, and data science applications in hydrology and hydraulics.

This internship will throw you in the middle of exciting projects involving GIS, 2D H&H Modeling, and Coastal Modeling, all enhanced through advanced analytics and machine learning. Your efforts in data analytics, GIS, and water resources management will contribute directly to developing innovative solutions for our clients.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Analyze large datasets using modern data science and analytic techniques
  • Develop and execute complex water-related models using 2D H&H and Coastal Modeling approaches
  • Utilize GIS tools for analyzing and modeling flood risk data
  • Operate high-performance computing solutions under Linux environments
  • Create and implement machine learning algorithms to tackle challenging issues
  • Work on data automation scripts and innovative UI/UX for data processing tools
  • Collaborate with our Modeling and Data Solutions (MIDAS) and Data Analytics and Automation (DAA) teams to formulate comprehensive data workflows
  • Deliver clear and concise presentations of technical findings to diversified teams

Professional Requirements:

  • Current enrollment in a graduate program related to Civil Engineering, Data Science, Computer Science, or equivalent fields
  • Understanding and operational knowledge of HEC-suite and other Coastal Modeling software
  • Proficiency with various GIS technologies including ESRI and open-source platforms
  • Adept at cloud service platforms like AWS (EC2, S3, Lambda)
  • Strong coding skills in Python or R, and experience with libraries such as pandas, NumPy, and Xarray
  • Exceptional problem-solving capabilities and team work skills

Preferred Skills:

  • A strong background in climate science and geospatial data analysis
  • Experience with advanced data visualization and dashboard development tools
  • Knowledge of machine learning and computer vision strategies

Compensation:

Interns will be compensated at a competitive hourly rate ranging from $15 to $30, depending on various factors including education and experience.
