The energy industry is experiencing the most significant transformation since the industrial revolution at a pace never seen before, and we are positioning ourselves to be at the center of this change.

Our goal is to be the foremost global provider of solutions that allow customers to unlock a yearly value of £30bn from distributed energy resources (DERs). We are developing a Software as a Service (SaaS) subscription business with a global market potential of £2.4 billion annually, by digitally connecting hundreds of thousands of DERs to energy markets.

We have already achieved a market-leading position and KrakenFlex is regarded as a thought leader and innovator in the industry. Our hard work has been recognized and we are happy to announce that we now have complete support and backing from Octopus Energy, an award-winning UK energy supplier who shares our passion and values.

We are in search of a flexible data visualization engineer who has a keen interest in all things visual, and a willingness to use their skills on a wide array of projects. At KrakenFlex NeXt, we address impossible challenges and put radical hypotheses to the test, borrowing ideas from academic literature, emerging technologies, and the imagination of our talented staff. By joining NeXt, you’ll be part of a dynamic environment where we construct tangible things to test and demonstrate these ideas—we need someone who can help us showcase them.

You'll excel at collaborating with colleagues from different disciplines to clearly describe and display concepts and data to non-specialists, and build a consistent identity for the group using diverse visual media. You'll aid us in constructing the tools that do the demonstrating, from basic presentations, themes, graphics, and visuals to interactive displays (e.g., websites or similar). The environment is highly cooperative and flexible, and your team members will each bring diverse skills to the table. We offer the freedom and flexibility for you to be creative, coupled with the resources and structure to help ensure and guide your success.

This role calls for two sets of skills: we need someone to guide the visual aspects of our work, from the design and UX of our projects to infographics and outreach materials. We also need someone to contribute to the coding that displays data, and help us shape the story used to explain concepts with that data. We have coders and data scientists to assist in this, but we are seeking someone who enjoys wearing both hats and getting involved in the group's work.

What you'll do

  • Work in a dynamic environment tackling diverse R&D demands in areas such as big data and AI, product design, and social sciences
  • Create engaging visualizations that present a wide array of data, research findings, and systems in a way that is clear and exciting to those who are not subject matter experts
  • Create and maintain a uniform visual identity, developing standards and resources
  • Shape our work's narratives: delve into challenging problems alongside data scientists, developers, and subject matter experts to mould our approach into something explainable, unique, and consistent
  • Work on sharing discoveries internally and externally

What you'll need

  • A desire to learn new skills and technologies relevant to data visualization and keep up to date with the newest trends and developments in the field
  • A willingness to work outside your immediate area and skillset and join in on what needs to be done in a startup atmosphere
  • Proficiency in using various tools and technologies for creating, analysing, and presenting data visualizations, like JavaScript, Python, D3.js, Tableau, Power BI, etc.
  • Storytelling abilities: The capacity to construct a compelling narrative that resonates with the audience and conveys the central message and purpose of the visual content.
  • Graphic design skills: The ability to apply design principles and elements such as colour, typography, layout, alignment, contrast, etc., to create visually appealing and consistent visual content.
  • Branding abilities: The capacity to create and maintain a consistent and individual identity for the visual content that conveys the values, vision, and personality of the company.
  • The ability to design and implement interactive and appealing data visualizations that effectively and clearly communicate complex data insights to various audiences.
  • Knowledge of data science and analytics concepts and methods, such as data cleaning, data manipulation, data exploration, statistical analysis, machine learning, etc.
  • Experience with different data source types and formats, such as APIs, JSON, CSV, SQL, etc.
