By supporting the digital transformation at Western Digital, we develop operations research solutions to maximize the effectiveness of our systems and processes. As a senior operations research engineer, you will provide optimization models, delivering business value to global functional teams working on production and capacity planning, scheduling, network, and system design. Your key contribution to our operations research projects will include collaboration with data science and operations research experts, application developers, and IT specialists. You will solve complex analytics and optimization problems and release solutions for real business applications. You will liaise with subject matter experts to understand their analytics needs and requirements for operations research modeling and solution delivery. Job Description
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- As an Operations Research Engineer, you will support optimization projects at global sites, primarily within the Asia Pacific region.
- You will gather information about the business problems, understand related current practices, and recognize the desired solution.
- You will collect analytical requirements from the business and translate the business problem into analytical problem definition statements.
- Your role will include setting up a mathematical model of the problem under study with data Input/Output interfaces.
- You will implement the mathematical model using declarative programming libraries such as FICO Xpress or Google OR-Tools.
- Conduct numerical experiments with the model and present the results to key project stakeholders.
- Support the go-live phase of the application, leveraging the math model at its core.
Skills:
- Industry knowledge of engineering concepts, Work in Progress Management, Production Control.
- Strong analytics skills for factory optimization, utilizing OR techniques such as linear and integer programming, constraint programming.
- Excellent English verbal communication skills.
- Solid presentation skills, proficient at communicating both domain and technical content.
- Experience understanding key performance levers and metrics to highlight operational issues and drive improvement.
- Able to identify, define and execute project plans and develop modeling approaches suitable for the problem.
- Capability to work independently on projects with minimal supervision.
- Proficient at breaking down complex problems and projects into manageable sub-tasks.
Qualifications
Required:
- Real-world experience supporting essential research and development projects, requiring an intricate understanding of systems.
- A Master's degree in Applied Math, Operations Research, Computer Science, Statistics, or related field.
- Four years or more hands-on experience in optimization modeling and analysis.
- Practical knowledge of optimization tools such as Gurobi, IBM ILOG CPLEX, FICO Xpress, Google OR-Tools.
- Hands-on programming skills in Python.
- Basic SQL database query-writing skills.
Preferred:
- A PhD in Applied Math, Operations Research, Computer Science, Statistics, or a related field.
- Understanding of production/manufacturing-related optimization problems and techniques such as production planning, scheduling, etc.
- Experience in the semiconductors industry.
- Strong abstraction skills, critical thinking, and problem-solving ability.
- Ability to collaborate with multiple stakeholders across different departments.
