Head of Machine Learning at Stealth Life Science Startup ABOUT US We are an early stage startup using generative AI to fundamentally redefine life sciences research and accelerate the speed of biomedical discoveries. Genomic data lies at the core of most modern molecular studies and tools - from basic research to clinical decision-making support, yet working with these data is challenging. It involves expensive labs, complex computational infrastructure, and large teams to produce and analyse it; a process that takes weeks or months. We are developing generative AI models to reduce this timeline to minutes or hours. Our platform addresses a massive need in the ever-expanding use of genomics in research, ranging from basic science to therapeutic development. mRNA therapeutics alone, a subset of the overall market we serve, is projected to be a $100 billion market by 2026. WHO WE ARE Our team is composed of individuals who have committed their careers to making strides in biomedical research and education, and have a thorough understanding of how to create a transformative product in this sector. Each of our founders boasts around 20 years of experience in life sciences, genomic data generation and analysis, and AI/ML and data science. We have leading experts in the design, execution, collection, and application of AI/ML methods to large biological studies; have previously led and scaled startups; and are experts in scientific training and enablement. We are intimately familiar with the problem at hand and are ready to solve it! WHAT YOU’LL DO IN THIS ROLE We are seeking a Head of Machine Learning who is enthusiastic about joining our mission, and who will significantly contribute to the early stages of building our AI-driven platform at the crossroads of machine learning and life sciences discovery. You will be instrumental in establishing and extending our machine learning program and long-term technical vision: - Be part of the founding team to develop and iterate the roadmap for model development - Construct generative models for experimental biology data - Create and implement an evaluation framework and metrics for models - Apply experiences and insights to the challenges of building forward-focused models that can transform how life sciences data are generated, analysed, and interpreted - Recruit and expand our machine learning team TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS The best candidates do not always match the limited criteria outlined in the job description. The specific types of models can vary, but a willingness and ability to learn quickly is essential. An interest in applying your skills to our mission is the crucial ingredient. Tech skills: - Experience in building generative models using PyTorch, Tensorflow, JAX or similar - Understanding of common generative architectures, including transformer and diffusion models - Experience in training and deploying AI/ML models in production environments - Knowledge of cloud computing environments and privacy-conserving architectures - Experience with Microsoft Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud Platform - Knowledge of key MLops, including model training, hosted inference options, and both batch and stream processing. Experience: - Creation of ML teams and models from scratch - Experience in model development and deployment at scale in either large tech or growth-stage start-up companies - Building models that are relevant to highly technical scientific domains - No minimum number of years or degree requirements, provided demonstrated understanding of the range of approaches needed (e.g., model architectures, cloud infrastructure, etc.) - Desired: Ideally, you have recruited, managed, and led a machine learning team - Desired: Ideally, you have some exposure to or interest in learning about genomic measurement technologies and life sciences research Approach: - Innovation-focused - Open-minded and adaptable; willing to change focus and direction quickly in response to product/market demands - Comfortable working both independently and in close collaboration with your own team as well as other teams with complementary expertise - Strong communication and a desire to be a key player - Focused on identifying, developing, and mentoring junior team members WHY YOU’LL LOVE WORKING WITH US Our founders are known for being thoughtful, progressive colleagues and mentors who nurture talent.
