What's the role?

We're hiring an Applied Machine Learning Scientist for the Marketplace Optimization team to assist in understanding buyer shopping endeavors, customer's long term values, seller success, marketplace health, and customer interest changes during online shopping. In your role as an Applied Scientist, you'll work intimately with software engineers to create custom large-scale machine-learning models that are operational in production to deliver customer impact. Our team is motivated by data and excited about innovating in the field of Machine Learning (ML). Our areas of interest and expertise include Ranking, Optimization, Natural Language Processing, Deep Learning, and Reinforcement Learning. Our primary goal is to apply these sophisticated techniques to enhance the search experience on our platform.

This is a full-time position reporting to the Engineering Manager of Marketplace Optimization, and the base range is $184,000 - 216,000 USD annually. Besides salary, you'll also be eligible for an equity package, an annual performance bonus, and that support you and your family as part of your total rewards package at Etsy. This role requires you to be present at Etsy's Brooklyn office in a flex capacity or in-person. Candidates living within a commutable distance of the Brooklyn Hub will be considered first. What’s this team like at Etsy?

The Marketplace Optimization team is part of Etsy's Search group, dedicated to refining search ranking quality for buyers and sellers. We work on the final pass ranking of search results, significantly shaping the overall customer search experience. The team includes machine learning engineers, applied scientists, and a product manager. Working intensively with software engineers and different product and enablement teams across the organization, we participate in the creation and execution of sophisticated machine learning algorithms that continually facilitate improved search results.

• Design, develop and maintain high-performing machine learning systems
• Research and implement innovative ML models to improve buyer shopping undertakings, customers’ long term values, seller success, marketplace health and customer interest transition in search results
• Work with analysts or independently on pre-analysis and post-analysis before delineating projects
• Influence the product roadmap using data-backed analysis
• Mentor junior scientists on the team

What does the daily routine look like?

• Identify opportunities to enhance our buyers’ search experience and propose a project plan backed by data analysis
• Initiate and lead new workstreams to improve Etsy’s Search engine ranking capabilities
• Develop innovative machine-learning ranking models that optimize for various business objectives to power search at scale
• Define data-driven projects and collaborate with internal & external colleagues from Data, Modeling, and ML Infrastructure teams
• Act swiftly to design, implement, optimize, and test new modeling improvements in both offline and production A/B experiment settings
• Draw conclusions from experiment results
• Lead high code quality and engineering standards in the team; Maintain and improve core machine learning pipeline

Qualifications

• 3+ years of experience in areas related to Search, Recommendation Systems, Personalization, and Applied ML
• Proficiency in writing high-quality production code, demonstrating robust modeling, data understanding, and coding skills
• Proficiency in neural ML frameworks like Tensorflow,
• Experience with web-scale data preprocessing and machine learning workflows such as Apache Spark, Beam, Kubeflow Pipelines, etc
• Prior experience working with cloud computing services like Google Cloud Platform
• A product-oriented focus for using machine learning to solve real-world problems. Knowledge of various machine learning techniques and significant parameters that affect their performance
• Strong verbal and written communication skills and comfortability working in a remote team with Slack and Google Docs
• Self-direction, flexibility, and a keen sense of responsibility
• A track record of publications in one of the following fields: information retrieval, recommendation systems, knowledge graphs, natural language processing, reinforcement learning
