Join SEI at Carnegie Mellon University as an Assistant Data Scientist

What We Do: Data Scientists at the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) harness advanced statistics, data analytics, machine learning, and artificial intelligence to aid our government and industry clients in solving complex cyber security challenges.

In this role, you will collaborate with customers to identify areas where advanced statistical methods can be applied, develop prototype solutions, and build final products. You will work alongside elite cyber security professionals and renowned university faculty to develop new technologies that will shape national cyber security strategy for years to come.

Key responsibilities include co-authoring research proposals, executing studies, building models, and presenting findings to DoD sponsors and at academic conferences. Our projects vary from designing experimental frameworks for extensive cybersecurity research programs, investigating human-in-the-loop machine learning, to creating classifiers that identify code vulnerabilities. Additionally, we delve into generative AI, large language models, deep fake detection, data visualization, and natural language processing, while leveraging diverse cyber-related data sources.

If you are a data science or statistics expert with a passion for cybersecurity, we want to connect with you!

Requirements:

  • BS in data science, machine learning, computer science, statistics, or a related quantitative discipline.
  • Willingness to travel modestly to support SEI’s mission.
  • Subject to a background investigation with the ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Defense security clearance.
  • Legally authorized to work for CMU in the United States. CMU will not sponsor employment visas for this opportunity.

  • Understanding of statistical modeling techniques and advanced data analytics.
  • Proficiency in at least one mathematical/statistical programming package (e.g., R, Python numpy/scipy/pandas, MATLAB).
  • Innovative and inquisitive mindset with the ability to conceptualize novel analytical solutions.
  • Expertise in one or more areas: machine learning (e.g., K-means, SVM, neural networks), data visualization, natural language processing, AI engineering, digital forgery, large language models.
  • Thrives in a multidisciplinary environment.
  • Strong communication skills.

Desired Experience:

  • Experience in predictive modeling, data science, or machine learning.
  • Experience in software engineering techniques for solution development.
  • Experience in cybersecurity is a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn new concepts and evolve into new work areas.
  • Experience or knowledge of generative AI and large language models is beneficial but not required.
  • Experience supporting test and evaluation for large-scale government research programs is a plus.
