What is the role?

Etsy is an international marketplace with more than 100 million handmade and vintage items from avid artists, designers and antique collectors. Our Recommendations and Personalization (PersoEng) allows product teams across Etsy to understand, personalize, and rank recommendations for our buyers.

As a Staff Applied Scientist, you will be responsible for introducing and implementing new solutions for Recommendations. We are searching for individuals who are driven by both product and technology and have a passion for implementing machine learning innovations in areas such as: Natural Language Processing, Representation Learning, Clustering, Optimization, Deep Learning, Graph Learning, and Reinforcement Learning to enhance the Etsy buying/selling experience!

This is a full-time position reporting to the Applied Science Manager with a base range of $196,000 - $230,000 USD per year. In addition to your salary, you will also be eligible for an equity package, an annual performance bonus, and our that support you and your family. This role requires your presence in Etsy’s Brooklyn office, either in-person or in a flexible capacity. Candidates living within commute distance of the Brooklyn Hub may be considered first. What is the team environment like at Etsy?

The Retrieval team develops capabilities to select relevant item-candidates to help product teams provide personalized user experiences. We utilize machine learning algorithms to train models that can be used to select appropriate personalized candidate-sets for our recommendation engine. We need an experienced machine learning scientist who can contribute to Etsy's next-generation capabilities for candidate generation.

• Initiate and lead projects to enhance the candidate generation capability of Etsy's Recommendation engine.
• Develop innovative representations to capture salient signals from our users and listings, including content, functionality, budget, and preferences.
• Develop models with customized architecture or objective functions that target Etsy-specific problems, such as personalized retrieval, ranking, revenue optimization, seller fairness, and seasonality
• Mentor other applied scientists and guide them in their projects
• Work closely and collaboratively with software engineers, data scientists, product managers, and designers
• This role will include other duties and responsibilities beyond these examples! Responsibilities may change over time and are subject to Etsy's discretion, or as required by local law.

Qualifications

Qualities that will help you succeed in this role are:

• Track record of successfully applying deep learning machine learning techniques to solve real-world problems
• Extensive experience with machine learning and deep learning solutions
• Ability to take on and lead unconstrained problems, knowing when to seek help and how to deliver results
• Ability to write and manipulate large-scale data in a distributed environment
• Proven success in developing production machine learning solutions. Comfortable using git, docker, airflow and other tools to develop robust, production-ready code
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Preferred requirements:

• Master's or Ph.D. degree in Computer Science or related fields, with 5+ years of hands-on machine learning experience
• Experience with Google Cloud Platform
• Experience in representation learning
• Experience in Approximate-Nearest-Neighbor (ANN) search
• Experience in building production-search systems, recommendation systems, advertising, structured data (knowledge base), or general e-commerce systems.
• Experience using the following frameworks: Spark Scala, Airflow, Kubflow, Tensorflow
