Job Description

As a Senior Data Engineer at Visa Research, you'll engage in discovering and managing a range of research projects within the Visa Research group. Your role is instrumental in driving innovation by championing technology, methods, and problem-solving approaches to create unique products. You'll steer the course of innovation from concept to rollout, leveraging machine learning, artificial intelligence, and big data research. Your duty involves researching and devising immaculate, swift, dependable, and secure payment solutions using basic and applied research methodologies.

You will collaborate with numerous stakeholders including senior executives, research scientists, software engineers and architects, along with external parties such as tech vendors, wallet providers, merchants, issuers, and senior regional product managers. You are expected to uncover and propose R&D opportunities, chart development plans and execute the ideas.

Our team is diligently working on creating a novel product suite for Visa’s instantaneous payment options! Central to this suite is fraud management, to be deployed across multiple markets at Visa. This new suite will utilize the latest Machine Learning & Deep Learning technologies for ‘real-time fraud monitoring’. We are on the lookout for Data Engineers with diverse backgrounds who are excited about building something new and innovative for Visa.

Through this role, you will be entrusted with the chance and responsibility to help shape the long-term vision of the payment industry and influence the trajectory of research and development across Visa.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Implementing services to launch AI and data science models capable of handling terabytes of data. Details include features like one-time and ongoing automatic model training, deploying and monitoring models, along with platform-related features like model repository, feature stores, data access layer.
  • Providing technical leadership for efforts around tools and infrastructure that enable teams to efficiently complete and support data science projects.
  • Teaming up with product delivery groups to fully implement the proof of concept and early product in Visa services and products.
  • Collaborating with research scientists, product owners, and architects to deliver a fast-prototyping platform.
  • Acting as a subject matter expert and promote innovation across organizations and industries through consulting or technology talks and presentations.
  • Describing technical solutions, capabilities, considerations, and features in business terms. Communicate status, risks, and issues effectively, providing detailed and timely updates.
  • Making decisions on trade-offs and priorities during the design and execution phases, such as weighing performance against flexibility, scope and timelines, availability, and scalability, etc.
  • Presenting and demoing research solutions to a committee on a regular basis.

This is a hybrid position. Hybrid employees can alternate between remote and office work. Employees in hybrid roles are expected to work from the office 2-3 fixed days a week (as determined by management and workplace), with a general guidepost of being in the office 50% or more of the time, depending on business requirements.

 

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

  • Minimum 5+ years of relevant work experience with a Bachelor’s Degree or at least 2 years of related work experience with an Advanced degree (e.g. Masters, MBA, JD, MD), or 0 years of work experience with a PhD, OR a minimum of 8+ years of relevant work experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 6 or more years of relevant work experience with a Bachelors Degree or 4 or more years of relevant experience with an Advanced Degree (e.g. Masters, MBA, JD, MD), or up to 3 years of related experience with a PhD in Computer Science or Computer Engineering or an equivalent field.
  • Experience in programming in at least one or more of these languages: Java, Python, Scala and Go
  • Exhibits a strong grasp of algorithms and data structures.
  • Proficiency in leading, creating and sustaining scalable and reliable data solutions, AI/machine learning-based systems that enable swift prototyping and advanced analytics using modern big data and ML/AI technologies (like Hadoop, Spark, Cloud, No-SQL, TensorFlow, H2O etc.) in an agile setting.
  • Demonstrable experience in developing and maintaining machine learning cycles: data preprocessing and feature extraction, model training, and evaluation, and deployment and monitoring.
  • Substantial experience and/or academic background in partnering with data scientists and ability to discuss major machine learning paradigms, algorithms, and software tools authoritatively.
  • A hands-on approach or academic experience in translating data science problem statements into corresponding data, infrastructure, or workflow requirements.
  • Familiarity with the associated open-source ecosystem (e.g., mlflow, cortex, seldon, Kubeflow, tfx) is a plus.
  • Knowledge and experience in working with front-end web application frameworks (Angular/React) along with HTML, CSS, JavaScript is a plus.
  • Experience in working with REST/JSON-RPC services, SQL, and NoSQL databases is preferable.

Working Hours: Works hours vary based on departmental needs.

Travel Requirements: This position necessitates travel 5-10% of the time.

Physical/Mental Requirements: The role will be conducted in an office environment and will require the incumbent to sit and stand at a desk, communicate in person and over the phone, and frequently use standard office equipment like telephones and computers.

FOR U.S. APPLICANTS ONLY: The anticipated salary range for a new hire for this position is between $126,000 and $163,800 USD, which may include potential sales incentive payments (where applicable). Salary can fluctuate depending on job-related factors, including knowledge, skills, experience, and location. Furthermore, this position may qualify for bonuses and equity.
