Job Description

The Data Scientist at Vitol impacts the entire data science workflow: from collaborating with business stakeholders to define the project, to data collection and processing, exploratory analysis, model selection and tuning, and implementation of production models or custom visualizations. We extract value from data in various ways; hence, experience in exploring and gaining insights from data is just as crucial as the ability to construct complex models. A good visualization can be as important as a small MAE when it comes to leveraging data for business outcomes. The data we work with is often complex and unstructured, so a successful Data Scientist at Vitol must be willing to delve into the data to achieve results.

The data scientist will routinely work directly with traders, brokers, analysts, and researchers across nearly all aspects of Vitol to understand the data that is fed into internal models and the business problems that need resolutions. However, daily collaboration mainly occurs within the small and highly agile Data Science team.

Responsibilities include:

  • Being a dynamic and committed member of a team uniquely situated to utilize the power of data to understand the inner workings of the energy industry.
  • Exploring new datasets, gaining insights, and visualizing the results.
  • Standardizing and structuring data in clear, easily understood, extendable ways.
  • Applying machine learning models in innovative ways to diverse data sets to optimize Vitol's multifaceted businesses.
  • Aiding in reviewing the code and experimental design of other Data Scientists to ensure high production quality.
  • Building data expertise with domain experts in specific sectors of Vitol's operations.
  • Assisting in implementing the models and custom visualizations mentioned above to drive business value.
