Job Description
This role will be based in Visa’s Sydney office. We are seeking a data scientist with experience in data preparation, data analysis and the implementation of AI-centered solutions. You will be working with Visa’s extensive datasets and in certain cases in cooperation with our clients’ data.
Candidates should have practical experience with relevant technologies and the ability to collaborate across teams and functions to deliver value to Visa and our clients.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work on a wide range of problems across areas like Marketing Analytics, Credit Risk, Open Banking/Open Data, and more. They must possess a highly analytical mindset and the necessary skills to independently analyze and interpret data insights.

The Data Science team at Visa Consulting & Analytics (VCA) plays a critical role within the Global Data Solutions organization. Composed of dedicated data scientists, analysts, and engineers, we aid major enterprises through analytic solutions. Our primary goal is to create solutions that empower our clients using one of the largest datasets in the world, VisaNet.
Principal Responsibilities
- Cooperate within the project team to support the design, development, and delivery of data science/engineering solutions to Visa clients, adhering to scope and timelines
- Develop and maintain positive relationships with clients.
- Provide mentorship to junior team members
- Collaborate with roles across the organization, including consultants, engineers, and data scientists to address prioritized business issues
- Create data-driven solutions/data science models in line with client's priorities and oversee different vendors for execution, if required
- Break large solutions into smaller, deliverable phases and seek feedback from product owners, clients, and other partners
- Define detailed scope and methodology, design and create solutions, and implement using suitable tools and techniques
- Support the development of a robust system for measuring and optimizing the quality of deployed algorithms and models
- Ensure AI models in production perform optimally, evaluate their performance, model drift, and decay
- Actively look for opportunities to innovate using VisaNet, external data and new modeling techniques that meet our clients' needs
- Ensure full adherence to legal/compliance/security-related requirements
Qualifications
Basic Qualifications and Experience
- Qualification in Data Science/Computer Science
- Experience as a data scientist/engineer or analytics consultant
- Hands-on experience in developing AI models, scaling data solutions, and delivering end-to-end data science projects
- Experience working with large and multi-dimensional datasets
- Proficient in implementing standard classification and clustering algorithms
- Proficient in big data aggregation using Hive, Spark, SQL and Python
- Experience with visualization tools like Power BI, Tableau, or similar
- Exceptional problem-solving skills
- Strong ability to manage internal teams and external clients, with a collaborative, diplomatic and adaptive style, able to work efficiently in a matrixed organization
- Demonstrate intellectual curiosity and commit to continual learning, self-driven and results-focused individual with the capability to handle multiple projects
- Ability to learn new tools and paradigms as data science continues to evolve at Visa and elsewhere
- Demonstrated resource planning and delivery abilities
- Good communication and presentation skills with the ability to interact with different cross-functional team members at varying levels
- Understanding of the Payments and Banking Industry, including aspects such as consumer credit, consumer debit, prepaid, small business, commercial, co-branded, and merchant would be a plus
- Consulting experience is a bonus
Technical Expertise
- Experience in writing and optimizing efficient SQL queries, Hive, Python and Spark
- Expertise in developing dashboards and reports using Tableau or Power BI
- Good understanding of Agile way of working
- Experience in deployment, operationalization of Machine Learning models
- Experience with Apache Airflow would be advantageous
- Experience with cloud-based data science platforms would be beneficial

Additional Information
This is a hybrid position. Hybrid employees can alternate between working remotely and from the office. Employees in hybrid roles are expected to work from the office 2-3 set days a week (determined by leadership/site), with a general guidepost of being in the office 50% or more of the time based on business needs.
